Road Tripping

Continuing a theme on missed towns, Calico Ghost Town is one of those tourist attractions dad might suggest during a family road trip. All us Angelinos (residence of Los Angeles) have seen the white sign on the mountain side reading, "CALICO" on our way to Las Vegas. Interstate 15 is a bit boring, but the side trips on lonely desert roads like--Route 66--is what Hollywood movies are made of.

As a side note, Ken added that Calico was used as the model for Knott's Berry Farm back in the 1950s.

JT, thanks for this one. I like the sign and yes it looks pretty lonely and boring.

Is there anything to Calico? I picture a gas station and convenience store... and maybe a pay phone.

I'm on my way out to work now..., but I made "Calico Ghost Town" a hyperlink to their website.

Brenda, Yes, it was an actual mining town made into an amusement attraction. In fact, that's where the photo of the boot came from.

Thanks everyone for your posts!

There's lots of things to see at Calico. It's an old Western mining town - site of the largest silver strike in the State of California during the silver rush of the 1880's.

It's like stepping back into time. You can tour Maggie's Mine and see how the miner's worked/lived back in the day. There's the old Schoolhouse, the Mystery Shack, the Lane House Museum, the old fire house, the bottle house -yep! a house made out of used whiskey bottles - and more. Calico also has three restaurants and fourteen shops. So don't pass by - take that 3 miles off the road and come up and explore.

Hello Agent of Adventure, Thank you for the plug on Calico. I neglected to expand on my experience at Calico. Nevertheless, there is a lot to do there, and everyone who joined me had a great time exploring Calico.

Calico is worth a side trip, or even a day trip. It was used as the model for Knott's Berry Farm.

Hey Ken,

That makes a lot of sense--about Knott's Berry Farm . For those not familiar about Knott's, I included an other hyperlink on the post.

Thanks again Ken.
